(1900-1940) Mediterranean style homes have their design roots in the grand homes found in the warm sunny locales of countries such as Spain and Italy.
Here in America, due to their inherent heat dispersing properties, most Mediterranean style homes can be found in warmer climates including California, Texas, Florida and Arizona.
Clay tile roofs are, perhaps, the Mediterranean style home’s most distinctive feature. These tiles help to reflect the sun and don’t absorb heat. A shallow, sloping roof prevents heat from building up inside, and wide overhanging eaves provide the home with welcome shade. Mediterranean style homes have many windows, typically arched, with the larger windows on the first floor. Most Mediterranean style homes are single story, but some have second floors. Open arches capture breezes and high ceilings allow for maximum air circulation. Heavy wooden doors grace the front of these homes, and exteriors are most often made from stone or stucco which also helps to keep the home cool.
