For the Kid Who Loves Cars

Let your child dictate the design with whatever is his or her favorite. It could be trucks, buses, racecars, or fire engines. If locomotives make his or her eyes light up, simply transform the roadway into train tracks.

Store-bought stamps or stencils can streamline this process, but making your own is easy. You can also add other traffic signs for a realistic touch.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Walls:

1. Prime the surface with Fresh Start® Primer and allow to dry.
2. Roll on the primer coat. Allow to dry according to label directions.
3. Measure the area of the wall to be used as the roadway, and mark it off with a light pencil line. Check with a carpenter's level to be sure this line is even.
4. Apply a strip of tape at the top edge (to protect the white basecoat from the edge of the black roadway).
5. Dampen sponge with water, and wring out thoroughly. Pour a moderate amount of black paint into a plastic plate or tray, and press the sponge into the paint.
6. Stamp the sponge once or twice onto newspaper, to get rid of excess paint and avoid messy drips.
7. Press the sponge firmly onto the wall, holding it horizontally.
8. Repeat, overlapping slightly, until the "road" section of wall is covered. Take care not to smear.
   Note: Do not worry about uneven lines as the road should look textured and rough.
9. When you have finished stamping, be sure to remove the tape before the paint dries completely. Allow the road to dry.
10. With scissors or a utility knife, cut a slice of sponge to create the road lines.
11. Dip sponge in Golden Orchards paint, and apply dotted lines above the road.

Stamps for Vehicles:

Note: If you have purchased pre-cut stamps, skip to step 4.

1. Draw or photocopy your desired vehicle shapes. You can use simple shapes (rectangles, circles, squares, and triangles) to construct more abstract vehicles.
2. Glue the shapes to a piece of thin cardboard.
3. Glue the cardboard to a sponge, and cut out the shape with a craft knife or scissors. Your stamps are now ready.
4. Pour a moderate amount of paint (color of your choice) into a plastic plate or tray, and press the sponge stamp
   into the paint.
5. Press stamp onto newspaper to rid the surface of excess paint before applying to the wall.
6. Stamp shapes onto the wall. Be careful to press lightly and do not smear. Wipe off drips or errors immediately with
   a damp rag.

Traffic Light:

1. Mask off a simple rectangular shape with tape.
2. Use a brush to paint the rectangle black. Remove the tape and allow it to dry.
3. Cut out a circular sponge with a diameter about the size of the lid from a quart can of paint. Stamp three circles in
   red (Poppy 1315), yellow (Golden Orchards 329), and green (Once Upon a Time 574).
