Selecting a Color Scheme

E-mail to a Friend Add To Favorites Print

The color wheel can help you in choosing a color scheme for a room or your entire home by visually illustrating various color harmonies.

Monochromatic

A monochromatic color scheme uses tints and shades of the same color. It creates a look that is sophisticated and elegant.

Complementary

A complementary color scheme includes the two colors that oppose each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors enhance one another, adding interest and energy to the decor.

Split Complement

A split complement color scheme combines hues to the left or right of its complement on the color wheel.

Triad

Triad color schemes include any three colors that are equally spaced on the color wheel (red-orange, yellow-green, blue-violet). When a triad color scheme is used, one shade is dominant, another is a secondary color, and the third is an accent color.

Analogous

An analogous color scheme uses consecutive colors on the color wheel (yellow, yellow-orange, orange) to create a pleasing palette. A normal execution of this scheme is to use one color more than the other two.
