Benjamin Moore Brightens Dorm Life with Color

(MONTVALE, NJ AUGUST, 2011) College spells freedom for many a student, especially for those living away from home. So, the institutional sameness of a dorm room becomes tough to accept while trying to relish the taste of independence.

"Lesson No. 1 for the college-bound who want to raise the failing grade of their dorm room is give the walls a fresh coat of paint," said Sonu Mathew, senior interior designer of Benjamin Moore. "It's one of the easiest and most economical ways to makeover your new digs, add a mood-elevating and upbeat color or two, and let your self expression cut loose."

If the average size of a dorm is 12-x-15 square feet, according to Mathew, three gallons should be sufficient. "And, if the choice is ben® from Benjamin Moore, our premium interior latex that's all-in-one primer and paint, there's no additional need to purchase primer. What's more it's low odor, low VOC and dries quickly."

For this fall, Mathew is suggesting some dynamic Benjamin Moore colors that should appeal to collegiate millennials who are looking to put their own personal stamp on their dorm room environment. Most of her recommendations are gender neutral and meant to inspire a generation that's inquisitive and receptive to change. Jewel tones and neutrals predominate, ideal choices that can go solo or be juxtaposed with one another to create a lively harmony. Her top five picks:

French Violet (1427) — Purple, which is said to be the color of imagination, is the "it" trend color for 2011, and this particular Benjamin Moore hue is on the blue end of the spectrum, which is where color is headed in 2012.

Celtic Green (2038-10) — This is a robust, rich green, and like others in this color family, evocative of fresh starts. Green also is the color of balance, which is an appropriate student goal.

Venetian Rose (1292) — Pink is an ultra-chic color for fall. Though an obvious choice for women, it's an unexpected accent for all. It exudes confidence and comfort when paired with neutrals or with yellows.

Sulfur Yellow (2151-40) — Yellow has long been associated with strong memory and intelligence. It adds instant warmth and this Benjamin Moore color is a light-hearted take on the gold and camel colors that are fashion hot this fall.

Grége Avenue (991) — Gray is all-important in décor this year, and this Benjamin Moore shade is inviting and warm. It's the perfect complement to all the colors in this suggested palette or ideal on its own.

For students who want to be true to their school, Mathew said that Benjamin Moore can match to perfection their emblematic colors. University of Miami Hurricane fans, for instance, will find Benjamin Moore Electric Orange (2015-10) and Grassy Fields (2034-30) a good choice. University of Alabama stalwarts should look at Million Dollar Red (2003-10) and Decorator's White (CC-20) if they want to show loyalty to the Crimson Tide.
