Benjamin Moore Color Matching Tool
Frequently Asked Questions

1. What paint brands will the Benjamin Moore Color Match Tool match to?

The color match tool will provide the closest match to Benjamin Moore’s 3500+ colors.

2. Where are the batteries on the device housed?

Opposite the side from your color calibration tile, you’ll see a crescent-moon shaped indentation to access pulling out the piece (like a drawer) that houses the two, CR2032 batteries. These batteries can be replaced when needed.

3. Where can I purchase new batteries?

You can purchase CR2032 cell batteries at most local convenience or hardware stores.

4. Is the Color Match Tool Bluetooth compatible?

Yes, it is compatible with Bluetooth 4.0 or higher.

5. How accurate are the color matches I get using the Color Match Tool?

The Benjamin Moore Color Match Tool has a greater than 85% accuracy rate on its top 3 color matches, which is more than adequate for most home, DIY projects. We have professional-grade ColorReaders (Benjamin Moore ColorReader and Benjamin Moore ColorReader Pro) if you require an even higher-level of color-matching precision (over 92%).

6. What things can I measure?

Flat, smooth, single-colored surfaces will net you the most accurate color-matching results from the Benjamin Moore Color Match Tool. The device should be placed flush, against the surface you’re measuring (touching it – not just aimed towards it) to ensure no surrounding light can seep in which can affect the accuracy of the color reading. Textured surfaces like stucco or nubby woven fabrics and high-sheen surfaces can affect color accuracy, as can gradient color surfaces. If measuring a color on a pattern, make sure the portion of the color you are measuring is large enough (at least ¼” X ¼”) to ensure the lens covers the surface entirely.

7. How do I set up my Color Match Tool device and connect to the app?

    Step 2:

Turn on your Color Match Tool by pressing the button on the front of the device*. Follow prompts to sync your device to your smartphone.

*The Benjamin Moore Color Match Tool comes ready with two CR2032 coin cell batteries that can be replaced when needed.

    Step 3:

Calibrate your device for the most accurate color measurement. The protective flip top lens cover functions as a calibration tile when closed. Make sure the protective lens cover/calibration tile is open before attempting to scan a color.

8. Getting The Best Results From Your Color Scans

  • Flat, smooth, single-colored surfaces will net you the most accurate color-matching results from your Color Match Tool.
  • Place the device flush against the surface you're measuring (touching it –not just aimed towards it) to ensure no surrounding light can seep in which can affect the accuracy of the color reading.
  • Textured surfaces like stucco, nubby woven fabrics and high-sheen surfaces can affect color accuracy, as can gradient color surfaces.
  • If measuring a color on a pattern, make sure the portion of the color you are measuring is large enough (at least ¼” X ¼”/ 0.635 X 0.635 cm) to ensure the lens covers the surface entirely.

9. Color Accuracy/Results

  • Please note that the colors displayed on-screen (or your phone) may not represent true paint or digital colors due to variances in device displays.
  • Paint fades over time and can wear unevenly due to exposure to UV rays from sunlight, dirt, grime, and cleaning products used, which is why we don’t recommend spot touch-ups. If you can’t repaint the entire room, at least repaint the whole wall or trim area.
  • You tried your Color Match Tool on a wall you know the paint color of (brand and color name) or on a paint chip from the store and found that you got a different color match? Here’s why:
    • As we mentioned before, paint fades over time – and color chips do, too – for similar reasons: UV sun exposure, dirt, grim, cleaning products. Your Color Match Tool is matching to the closest paint color as the color appears now.
    • Tried scanning different parts of your wall only to find different color matches for each spot? Again, paint can fade unevenly depending upon what it has been exposed to. Our eyes “see” one color, but there can be subtle shade variations that go unnoticed.

*Color discrepancies may occur due to fading/soil/weathering of wall paint/paint chip.
