The Williamsburg® Paint Colour Collection

The Williamsburg® Colour Collection captures the vibrant tapestry of the Colonial Period in America. Rooted in the authentic artifacts and homes of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia—but seen through a contemporary lens—the result is a diverse collection of historic colours that are full of personality.

To merge authentic, early American design history with Benjamin Moore paint colours, we collaborated with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Our shared dedication to understanding the 18th and early 19th centuries’ rich colour pigments led us to curate the 144-colour Williamsburg® Colour Collection and bring timeless beauty to your home.

The Williamsburg® Colour Collection recreates the colours that defined the early years of the United States.

Historically Accurate Paint Colours

Together with preservationists at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Benjamin Moore’s chemists and colour experts examined 18th-century wallpaper, original paint samples and historical documents to accurately recreate colours found in early American design.

Meet Heather Chadduck Hillegas, WILLIAMSBURG Designer in Residence

Colour and history come to life at the Nelson-Galt House, the oldest residential dwelling in Colonial Williamsburg, dating back to 1695. Renowned interior designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas—a Virginia native—took care when imparting her signature style on its interiors, using a mix of vintage textiles, handpicked accents, and gorgeous hues from the Williamsburg Paint Colour Collection palette.

Historically accurate yet highly relevant to modern day design, the results are as gorgeous as they are inviting.

Paint Colour Brings Modern History Forward

For the Nelson-Galt house, Chadduck Hillegas wanted to make sure the home’s interior was seen through a contemporary lens while still being rooted in history. She achieved this task by choosing timeless hues like Harwood Putty CW-5 and Finnie Gray CW-55. Additionally, Mopboard Black CW-680—a colour historically found on mopboards (an early term for baseboard) around Colonial Williamsburg—was used throughout the house.

To capture a light and airy feel in the sunroom, shown here, Chadduck Hillegas selected Nelson Blue CW-635, a sheer, watery hue with an elegant, ethereal quality.

A Vivid Past

Research led to the development of deeply saturated paint colours not typically associated with colonial America. Why? New technologies uncovered evidence that historic pigments were more saturated than originally thought. From there, Benjamin Moore chemists—working with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation—calculated precise formulas to match the original, authentic colours.

A stunning example of the depth of colour unearthed by Colonial Williamsburg research is seen here in this powder room, painted in Carter Plum CW-355.
