16. How long does it take for Benjamin Moore paint to dry?

Each Benjamin Moore product is different, so the official answer is that the amount of time it takes Benjamin Moore paint to dry is "it depends".

Each Benjamin Moore product has a Technical Data Sheet (TDS) which is the best place to look for product-specific paint dry-times.

For a general idea, however, consider the typical drying time of our most popular premium brand:

Regal® Select Interior

  • Dries to the touch: 1 hour
  • Recoat time: 1-2 hours
  • Full cure: 14 days ('curing' is the point where the paint reaches maximum hardness)

Other influences for how long it takes paint to dry:

  • Substrate types: Drywall, brick, wood, metal, vinyl, stone, concrete, ceramic tiles, plastic
  • Environment: Paint takes longer to dry in humid environment, and dries faster in dry ones
  • Waterborne acrylic/latex paints, like AURA® Interior, Regal® Select Interior and ben® Interior, dry faster. Alkyds, oil-based, and waterborne alkyds, like ADVANCE® Interior paint, generally take longer to dry.

17. Which Benjamin Moore interior paint is best?

Deciding which Benjamin Moore paint is best depends on your needs as a customer as well as the project. That said, here are three of the best Benjamin Moore interior paints:

  • AURA® Interior is Benjamin Moore's ultra-premium paint. AURA Interior offers unparalleled colour depth and richness. AURA's Colour LockTM technology seamlessly locks pigments into the paint's film, ensuring long-lasting colour. Not surprisingly, AURA® Interior is the preferred paint of interior designers.
  • REGAL® Select Interior is a time-tested premium interior paint that you can trust to deliver outstanding quality and durability for results that last.
  • ben® Interior elevates your confidence with its easier application, great touch-up qualities, and longer open time, resulting in flawless results and a more effortless painting experience.

18. Which Benjamin Moore exterior paint is best?

Deciding which Benjamin Moore paint is best depends on your needs as a customer as well as the application. Here are four Benjamin Moore exterior paints to consider:

  • AURA® Exterior paint provides the ultimate performance for rich, full colour and unprecedented durability with its exclusive Colour LockTM technology.
  • REGAL® Select Exterior paint resists fading, cracking, and peeling and provides a mildew-resistant coating, even in humid conditions.
  • ben® Exterior paint delivers beautiful transformations—the perfect choice for painters who want premium paint with easy and forgiving application properties.
  • ARBORCOAT® Exterior stain enhances the natural beauty of exterior wood surfaces with a wide variety of opacities and colours. ARBORCOAT® stain provides superior protection against mildew, UV damage, and other harsh weather conditions.

Product Questions

19. Where can I find Benjamin Moore Natura® interior paint?

Starting March 1, 2021, Benjamin Moore is no longer manufacturing Benjamin Moore Natura® paint. For a premium Benjamin Moore® interior paint that meets or exceeds even the most stringent environmental standards, consider Eco Spec®, our greenest paint. Our low-odour offering is zero-VOC and has zero emissions and several third-party environmental certifications.

20. What is Benjamin Moore's greenest paint?

Benjamin Moore remains committed to the planet and to providing paint products that meet or exceed even the most stringent environmental standards. Eco Spec® is our greenest paint, offering low odour, zero VOCs, zero emissions and several third-party environmental certifications.

21. Is Benjamin Moore paint good quality?

We think so! Benjamin Moore strives to manufacture the best quality paint on the market and has been North America's favourite paint, colour and coatings brand since opening in Brooklyn circa 1883.

Benjamin Moore paints excel due to rigorous testing and an unwillingness to compromise on quality. Perfection comes from combining our unique paint formulas with our proprietary Gennex® Colour Technology. Together, they work to deliver results that are both stunning and long lasting. Check out this profile of our paint colour testing facility here!

22. Is Benjamin Moore paint oil-based or latex?

Both! Benjamin Moore offers paint in several formulas, including:

  • Latex or acrylic—waterbased paint
  • Alkyd—oil-based paint
  • Specialtywater-based alkyd (includes alkyd properties with soap and water cleanup)

Each painting project is different. Consult with the staff at your independently owned Benjamin Moore retailer—they can help you choose the right product for your next DIY project!

23. What is Gennex® Colour Technology?

Gennex® Colour Technology is the reason that you cannot “match” Benjamin Moore® colour in another paint brand. Why? Because the combination of Benjamin Moore’s proprietary Gennex® waterborne colorant with Benjamin Moore paint creates an end-result that simply cannot be replicated.

Most common paint colorants require the addition of certain chemicals so that they can easily mix into any number of paints—chemicals that ultimately weaken them. Proprietary Gennex Colour Technology is engineered specifically by Benjamin Moore, for Benjamin Moore paints. The result is the premium paint that makes Benjamin Moore synonymous with quality.

Aura® Interior paint, Aura® Exterior paint, Benjamin Moore Eco Spec® Interior paint, Regal® Select Interior paint, Regal® Select Exterior High Build paint, ben® Interior paint, ben® Exterior paint and many others are engineered with the “science” behind Benjamin Moore quality: Learn more about Gennex® Colour Technology.

24. What is Colour LockTM?

Benjamin Moore’s proprietary Colour Lock™ technology is exclusive to premium Aura® Interior paint and Aura® Exterior paint. Thanks to Colour Lock™, colour pigments are locked into the paint film, so colour doesn’t fade, even after repeated washings. Benefits of Aura® with Colour Lock™ technology include:

  • Covers walls more completely so you can use less paint
  • Unprecedented durability and no colour rub-off, even after repeated washings
  • Extreme hide to cover dark colours and imperfections
  • Uniquely smooth finish

In addition to Aura® Interior and Exterior paints, Colour Lock™ enhances Aura® Colour Stories®, a sophisticated collection of 240 colours that exhibit an accentuated response to different lighting conditions.

Colour Sample Questions

25. What sheens are Benjamin Moore colour samples?

The sheen for all pint-sized Paint Colour Samples is interior eggshell, but our paint is available in most finishes. Check out our guide to choosing a paint finish to help decide what sheen is right for your project.

26. Where can I get a Benjamin Moore colour consultation?

Many Benjamin Moore independently owned retailers offer colour consulting that can take place either virtually or in person. Find a retailer to inquire about your local store's colour consulting services.

Take advantage of Benjamin Moore's robust library of Colour Tools. Bring home Colour Samples to help you observe colour at home in different lighting conditions (natural and artificial), and download the free Benjamin Moore Color PortfolioTM app to tap into the power of the Photo and Video Visualizers, both of which let you "try on" colours using your phone's camera.

27. Where can I buy paint sample and colour swatches?

Brush-on, pint-sized paint samples are available in-store and online. You can purchase them directly from your local Benjamin Moore retailer, or, you can order from the Benjamin Moore Online Store and either pick them up in-store, or have them shipped: your choice!

Online Exclusive

4" x 8" colour swatches are available online only, and are not available in stores.

28. What is the difference between a Benjamin Moore Colour Sample and a colour swatch?

Benjamin Moore offers two types of colour samples:

Paint colour samples (available in stores and online): Benjamin Moore Colour Samples are pint-sized cans of paint in the colour of your choice. They are only available in eggshell sheen, and are formulated for interior use only.

Paint colour samples cover approximately two 4' X 4' or eight 2' x 2' areas with two coats of paint. You can brush a paint colour sample directly on your wall—or on a white poster board. We recommend a large white poster board, so you can move it around the room throughout the day to see how it will appear in different lighting conditions. This helps avoid surprises on your ultimate colour choice. If you opt to brush your paint colour sample directly on your wall, consider using a primer if needed.

Colour swatches (available online only): These 4” x 8” swatches, in an eggshell finish, allow you to test a colour without painting a wall. Colour swatches are a good choice when trying to decide between many colours at one time. Simply tape them on to your wall (note that colour swatches are not ‘peel and stick’), observe them in different lighting conditions, and compare colours against another.

Both paint colour samples and colour swatches are final sale and not eligible for refunds. Benjamin Moore Colour Samples and colour swatches are shipped from different locations, so they may arrive at different times. There is an order maximum of 10 colour swatches per customer.

29. Do you sell samples of exterior stain?

Yes. You can purchase a 473 mL (16 oz., or 1 pint) sample of ARBORCOAT® Exterior Solid Colour Stain in a variety of colours from our online store.

Be sure to check the hours before you go, as all Benjamin Moore retailers are independently owned, so hours vary.
